Presented by: Dr. Thorne Lay (UCSC Earth & Planetary Sciences Department) January 19, 2014 During the past 9 years, the rate of occurrence of great earthquakes with magnitudes larger than 8 has increased by 250% relative to the rate over the previous earthquake disasters in the 9 year period. New global observation systems have provided unprecedented seismic, geodetic, and tsunami recordings for these events used to quantify these giant ruptures, revealing many unexpected characteristics.
A new "science cafe" is starting up in Santa Cruz, designed to connect the Santa Cruz community to the latest research happening at UC Santa Cruz. Science on Tap, held monthly at the Crepe Place in Santa Cruz, features scientists from UCSC who will present their work and engage in discussions with the audience in a relaxed setting. The informal talks are aimed at a general audience, including nonscientists and people not affiliated with UCSC.
