Presented by: Dr. Stacy Philpott (UCSC Environmental Studies Department) March 12, 2014 Coffee evolved under the forest canopy, and has been traditionally grown under the shade of trees. Yet over the past decades, coffee production systems have been intensified leading to a reduction or removal of the shade canopy, and higher levels of chemical inputs. The negative impacts of coffee management intensification for biodiversity are quite clear, and impacts on ecosystem services such as pollination, predation, and protection from natural disasters are coming into focus. Stacy will discuss the diversity of coffee management practices and their effects of biodiversity and ecosystem services, and subsequent implications for successful coffee farming.
