Archive.org or Wikipedia are only the most prominent examples of so-called digital commons where common goods are offered free of commercial interests. While commons such as grazing land, water or fishing grounds are in danger of overexploitation, digital data can be endlessly replicated. However, digital commons are under huge pressure to commercialize. More and more open access offers are being displaced by paid platforms. What opportunities are there for digital commons and what must be done to maintain their status as common property?
