CB1 receptors are ten times more prevalent in the CNS than ɰ opioid receptors and appear in overlapping neuroanatomical distribution which raises the question of a possible interaction between the opioid system and the endocannabinoid system. Both receptors function through G-protein coupled receptors of neurotransmitters. In this lecture, we will give a brief overview of the endocannabinoid system and present the evidence from peer reviewed published articles on the option for using cannabis, and specific cannabinoids, for the treatment of heroin addiction and lowering or complete withdrawal from opioid pain medication and by this help combat the opioid epidemic. We will also present the evidence for cannabis, especially CBD, anxiolytic properties, stress reduction and anti-psychotic properties which are also important in reference to addiction therapy. ............................................................................................................
