What will cannabis culture look like after prohibition? Four years after Colorado became the first state to legalize adult-use marijuana, a new normal is emerging. More people than ever are coming out of the cannabis closet, embracing the plant as a positive and public part of their lives. As we watch legalization yield social and public health benefits, a more positive conception of cannabis is supplanting the fear-based rhetoric of the war on drugs. But challenges remain. As a cannabis entrepreneur and advocate, Jane West has been at the forefront of Colorado’s legal lifestyle. In this talk, West will describe how cannabis has evolved as a movement and a social good in the years since full legalization began. She will highlight changes in the consumer experience and the public dialogue, share ongoing challenges, and outline strategies for facilitating a more honest and informed dialogue around safe, responsible consumption. As legalization expands globally, we will all have a role in reshaping the way society understands and engages with the cannabis plant.
