The world of cybercrime is mysterious. Being remote, online and young, cybercriminals are hard to find and to understand. We don’t know how they perceive their own actions. Do they care about attacking? More than a year ago, CTU and Avast partnered to analyse our discovery of a new botnet and group called Geost. This group infected ~1 million phones in Russia and allegedly managed millions of Euros. Having access to one year of their chat logs, we dig deep into their attacks, money laundry schemas, infrastructure used, personal motivations, social pressures, the private data of their personalities and the details of their operation. As a result we have a much better comprehension of the motivations behind cybercrime.
