From Spiritual Emergency to Spiritual Competency

Sep 29, 2017

The early transpersonal work by Christina and Stanislav Grof on distinguishing a spiritual emergency from a psychotic disorder starting in 1980 led to acceptance of a new diagnostic category for spiritual problems in the *DSM-IV* in 1994 also in the current *DSM-5* (for which the presenter was a co-author). This in turn has laid the foundation for new work on spiritual competencies published in mainstream peer reviewed journals. One of these competencies involves the importance of distinguishing psychopathology from potentially spiritually transformative experiences. Other competencies include recognizing spirituality as a resource for wellness and recovery and the value of spiritually oriented interventions such as mindfulness practices and holotropic breathwork. This presentation explores the many contributions the field of transpersonal psychology has made to expanding the role of spirituality in psychotherapy. David Lukoff is an Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Sofia University in Palo Alto, CA and a licensed psychologist in California. He has been an active researcher and proponent of spiritual competency in the field of psychology and authored 80 articles and chapters on spiritual issues and mental health, co-authored the DSM-IV category Religious or Spiritual Problem, and has been an active workshop presenter internationally on spiritual competency, loss and grief, death and illness, spiritual problems and emergencies.
