In 2020, most applications still rely on passwords to authenticate users of an application. As a security community, we even convinced ourselves that it is not that bad and that we can make it work in practice. Unfortunately, we are mainly kidding ourselves. In this session, we will not take a desperate look at the past. Instead, we look forward to modern end-user authentication mechanisms. We investigate a bunch of recipes for handling user authentication, along with their security pros and cons. Concretely, we look into modern authentication practices for web applications, including smartphone authenticators, hardware tokens, and the shiny new WebAuthN APIs. In the end, you will be up-to-speed with user authentication, allowing you to choose the best recipe for your application.
