Susan E. Mullally is a data scientist at the SETI Institute working at NASA's Ames Research Center on the agency's exoplanet-hunting Kepler mission. She earned a bachelor's degree from Hanover College and a PhD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has worked on a variety of topics related to optical and UV time series data including variable white dwarfs, binary stars and transiting exoplanets. Mullally is currently leading the development of the final exoplanet catalog for the Kepler mission. The catalog is being developed in such a way that the completeness and instrumental reliability of the catalog can be measured. Mullally and her team have done this by finding automated ways to determine if a signal is indeed a transiting exoplanet.
