Earth observations through satellites have provided unparalleled information about the Earth System and its components, viz. atmosphere, hydrosphere, cyrosphere, geosphere and biosphere. The assimilation of these observations into global models have provided improved understanding about transfer of mass and energy across, as well as within, these components. This improved knowledge about interaction between earth system processes helped to improve predictions of the weather, climate, hazards, sustainable use of resources, and conservation of environment. Case studies showing utility of satellite observations in developing services for farmers, fishermen, etc. have been discussed. The continuity of missions for providing synoptic and real time information on earth system variables is critical to provide such services.
