Martin Lanzendörfer, Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Prague, Czech Republic Formation of a thin film of lubricant in between two solid mechanical elements in relative motion is studied in (elasto)hydrodynamic lubrication. Engineering predictions are based on a model reduction due to thin film flow assumptions, leading to Reynolds approximation and its many generalizations. We will briefly review the classical concepts and comment on some recent results and why attempts to use the CFD approach proved to be limited so far.
