In 2018, for the first time, we undertook a one semester course to teach Scala (and Spark) to graduate level business majors with very little previous programming experience. This presentation will present: The topics we taught How we chose those topics Student stats (previous programming experience, etc.) How it went (teacher's perspective) Student feedback on the experience Lessons learned Future plans In addition to leading a team of scientists and engineers in the pursuit of data insights, Austin is also an adjunct faculty member who teaches two graduate classes, in Big Data Analytics, at the University of Texas at Dallas - working to develop students into successful data analysts. Both classes heavily feature Scala and Spark.
