The Use of Cannabinoids in Neurological Disorders Dmytro Isaev, PhD Cannafest Conference 2017 Sledujte přednášku v češtině: http://bit.ly/Konopi_neurologicke_onemocneni_Cannafest2017 ............................................................................................ In the recent years, the tendency for the decriminalization of cannabis for medical and recreational use has become apparent in many countries of the world. Concerning the available experimental and clinical data, medical potential of cannabis plant products and cannabinoid compounds can be hardly overestimated. The demand of the society for new potent therapy gave rise to vigorous scientific research on cannabinoids, though this research still remains limited. From anecdotal cases, the therapeutic potential of cannabis in neurological disorders has been known for hundreds, if not thousands of years. However, only as recently as in 1988, the discovery of endocannabinoid receptors by Devane et al. allowed scientists to investigate the cellular mechanisms of endo- and phytocannabinoids under normal and pathological conditions. In 2017, the US Food and Drug Administration made a statement saying that, in general, cannabinoids have positive effects on treatment of neurological disorders. Recently, synthetic cannabinoids were approved as medical drugs for the treatment of rare forms of epilepsy: Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. The data obtained from preclinical and clinical research on cannabinoids for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy, chronic pain, Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, dementia and other, suggest that cannabinoid compounds represent a promising potent therapy for the multiple neurological disorders. ............................................................................................................
