Deep neural networks have rewritten many areas of research and machine translation is no exception, matching human translation quality in certain settings. Yet, no real ‘understanding’ of the content has emerged. The amazing performance gains we are and will be seeing for a while will however not surpass a certain hard ceiling until we reach this ‘understanding’, the general AI.
