Recently, game-playing agents based on AI techniques have demonstrated super-human performance in several sequential games, such as chess, Go, and poker. However, in many real-world human-agent interactions that are repeated over time, humans may adopt suboptimal strategies and drop out from the repeated interaction if they are not sufficiently engaged in the competition. For instance, this may happen when they are losing too much against the agent, as well as when they are winning too often since they get bored playing. AI tools that are currently used to build super-human agents fail to capture these issues. In this work, we study the problem of designing artificial agents that learn in an online fashion how to effectively exploit an unknown human opponent while at the same time guaranteeing that the latter remains engaged. We first formalize a set of linear constraints that the agent's strategies must satisfy to guarantee that the human keeps being engaged. Then, we use this formulation in an upper confidence bound bandit algorithm, and we prove that it suffers from sublinear regret while guaranteeing engagement constraints be satisfied with high probability at each iteration. Finally, we empirically evaluate the convergence of our algorithm on standard testbeds.Recently, game-playing agents based on AI techniques have demonstrated super-human performance in several sequential games, such as chess, Go, and poker. Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) is a multi-track machine learning and computational neuroscience conference that includes invited talks, demonstrations, symposia and oral and poster presentations of refereed papers. Following the conference, there are workshops which provide a less formal setting.
